Finding Home Abroad: My Journey to Community and Belonging in a Spanish Village

Traveling to a new country is a thrilling adventure, full of new experiences, cultures, and opportunities. For me, it was a dream come true to immerse myself in a different way of life. This dream turned into a plan to one day buy a home in Spain. "One day" became a reality when I bought a home in a charming Spanish village. What I found there was more than just a second home; I discovered a profound sense of community and belonging that enriched my life in ways I had never imagined.

From the moment I arrived, the warmth of the villagers enveloped me like a comforting embrace. Unlike the hustle and bustle of life in the United States, the pace in my new village was slower, more deliberate, and centered around relationships and community.

Even though I didn't speak their language, neighbors greeted me with genuine smiles and open hearts, inviting me to local gatherings, festivals, and everyday rituals that quickly made me feel like part of the community.

One of the most striking aspects I always noticed in my travels to Spain over the years was the sense of intergenerational connection. In my village, it was common to see children playing in the streets, elders sharing stories in the plazas, and families coming together for meals and celebrations. This vibrant tapestry of life reminded me of the importance of community bonds and the joy that comes from being part of a close-knit group. It is this intense sense of community that I strive to create around me in the United States.

Coffee in the plaza became a focal point of my routine, not just for sipping café but for socializing and finding opportunities to practice my Spanish. Here, I learned the history of the village, the stories of the artists that helped revive the village, the ancient agricultural traditions of Vilafames, and often received cooking tips and family recipes from those gathering in the plaza. This simple act of taking coffee became a cherished ritual, fostering a deeper appreciation for this village.

Language, initially a barrier, is becoming a bridge. Determined to integrate fully, I immersed myself in learning Spanish. The villagers appreciate my efforts, offering patience and encouragement as I stumbled through conversations. This mutual exchange of language and culture create a sense of camaraderie and mutual respect that helped me overcome my initial apprehensions.

My new home has become both a sanctuary of peace and a hub of social activity. The old stone house, with its traditional Spanish architecture and cozy interior, reflected the warmth and simplicity of my lifestyle in Spain. Hosting dinners, sharing wine, and engaging in heartfelt conversations under the starry Spanish sky is a regular part of my life when I am there. These engagements deepen my connections with those around me.

This sense of belonging extended beyond my immediate village. As I explored the region, I found a network of expatriates and locals who shared my love for Spain and its culture. These new friendships broadened my horizons and enriched my understanding of my second home.

In embracing the Spanish way of life, I discovered the profound impact of community and belonging. It wasn’t just about living in a new place; it was about being part of a collective, where every individual’s presence mattered, and every interaction was meaningful. This experience taught me the true essence of home: a place where you are accepted, valued, and loved. A place of vida tranquila.

For any woman considering a similar journey, my story serves as an inspiring testament to the beauty of taking a leap of faith. It shows that in the quest for new experiences, one can find a sense of community and belonging that transcends borders and transforms lives.
