Unleashing Your Potential: The Power of Goal Setting in Becoming Your Best Self

Today, I had the privilege of attending a tea party—Unity—where I served as a guest mentor for exceptional young women representing all the high schools in Springfield, Missouri. Specifically, I was tasked with co-hosting a table for four remarkable seniors. During the event, the guest speaker posed a crucial question: how many of the women present had created and written their goals? Shockingly, fewer than 20% of the attendees raised their hands. It struck me deeply how such a seemingly simple yet profound practice was overlooked by the majority of the room. In my work as the CEO of a nonprofit focused on people living paycheck to paycheck, my team guides people in creating and achieving their goals every single day. Goals are just part of the culture in our office. Just last night I taught a class of 20 adults how to start setting goals by first creating the dream and then giving that dream form through a Vision Board.

In the journey of self-improvement and personal growth, creating your vision and then setting goals acts as a guiding light, illuminating the path towards becoming the best version of yourself. Goals provide clarity, direction, and motivation, empowering you to take deliberate action and make meaningful progress towards your vision of your best future. The act of thinking a goal through and then writing it down ignites great potential.

Setting goals allows you to define what success looks like for you and create a roadmap to get there. Whether your goals are focused on career advancement, physical fitness, personal development, or relationships, goals serve as a compass, helping you navigate through life's challenges and uncertainties with intention and determination. The process of setting goals encourages self-reflection and introspection, prompting you to identify your strengths, weaknesses, values, and priorities. By gaining a deeper understanding of yourself and your aspirations, you can align your goals with your authentic desires and create a life that is truly meaningful and fulfilling.

One of the most powerful aspects of goal setting is its ability to fuel motivation and momentum. When you set clear, achievable goals and then break them down into smaller, actionable steps, you create a sense of momentum that propels you forward towards your vision. Each small victory and milestone achieved reinforces your confidence and belief in your ability to succeed, inspiring you to continue pushing towards your ultimate vision of success.

Setting goals creates accountability and commitment. By publicly declaring your goals to yourself and others who support you, you establish a sense of accountability that motivates you to stay focused and disciplined in pursuit of your dreams. Additionally, breaking your goals down into specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) steps helps you stay on track and monitor your progress along the way. Don't know where to start? Create a vision board out of magazine clippings or use a website like Canva.com to shape a visual example of what your future dream life looks like. There isn't a wrong way to start setting your goals. What do you want to achieve tomorrow? How about by the end of the week? And if you do those steps regularly, what can you expect by the end of the month or the year? What does the best version of you look like? What are you striving for?

It's important to remember that the journey towards becoming your best self is not always smooth sailing. There will inevitably be obstacles, setbacks, and challenges along the way. However, setting goals equips you with the resilience, determination, and perseverance needed to overcome adversity and keep moving forward. Setting goals is a transformative practice that empowers you to unleash your full potential and become the best version of yourself. By defining your aspirations, clarifying your priorities, and taking intentional action towards your objectives, you can create a life that is aligned with your truest desires. So, dare to dream big, set your sights high, and embark on the journey of self-discovery and personal growth with confidence and conviction. Your best self is waiting to be unleashed—what are you waiting for?

Example of a Goal: "I will adopt stress management techniques into my daily routine. Specifically, I will engage in at least 20 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise three days a week. I will also dedicate 10 minutes daily to mindfulness meditation or deep breathing exercises. By December 31st, I aim to achieve a measurable improvement in my energy levels, mood, and overall health markers, as evidenced by increased physical fitness, decreased stress levels, and enhanced emotional wellbeing."

Example of a simplified Goal: "I will practice Spanish lessons daily for 20-30 minutes and meet with a tutor weekly to increase my fluency in 2024.

Example of a simplified Goal: "I will save an additional $50 weekly in automatic deposits to establish my emergency fund in 2024."
